Holiday travel in carListen, we all know that this time of year can be really stressful. The holidays are notorious for feeling anxious and overwhelmed with wanting to make everything perfect for those that we love. We get it. But you don’t want to pile on top of all that stress with adding an automobile accident to the fray.

Let’s talk about the best ways to avoid an accident this holiday season:

    • Relax. I know, I know, this is easier said than done. While you’re out and about tackling holiday errands, throw on your favorite tunes to keep you chill and entertained. Or maybe listen to a podcast that you love. Provide a comfortable atmosphere inside your car to keep the crazy outside world at bay. Find your zen. It will make things a whole lot easier on yourself.
  • Take your time. Allow yourself all the time in the world to get from point A to B. I know, easier said than done. But leave a little earlier than necessary or give yourself breathing room when you’re running errands. Don’t stress. Breathe. You’ll get there when you get there. Better safe than sorry. Did we hit all the “Dad things” to say? You’ll be much happier being late, than being in an accident.
    • Engage in defensive driving. Avoid distracted and stressed drivers, by being cautious and aware of other drivers. Allow the crazy speeding cars to wash right by you like you are a stone in a river. A stone that is moving at a reasonable pace, but you get the metaphor.
  • Avoid texting and keeping people apprised of your status while driving. Send texts before and after you are driving. Let people know your arrival times and other pertinent information before you leave, so you’re not stressed and fumbling to update others. Avoid accidents by being focused on your driving and not communicating with others.
  • Be alert.  Keep your head on a swivel to see those distracted drivers and keep an ample distance away from them to avoid any unnecessary accidents. Especially when the weather gets bad. With slippery roads, all sorts of things can happen, so be hyper-aware of what everyone is doing. We’re all in this together. For example, if everyone is avoiding a particular lane, there’s probably a reason for it. So follow suit and keep to that lane. It can get tricky out there, so pay attention and be safe.

We know you can be as present and attentive all day long and accidents will still happen. People can get distracted and rear end you, they can find your blind spot, or they can side swipe you out of nowhere. But with these tips perhaps we can keep you out of harm’s way this holiday season. And if you have some unfortunate luck, we’re here to help. Oakdale Collision can get you fixed up and back on the road so you can enjoy time with family and friends and delight in delicious treats and twinkling lights.
